Mandatory Label Initiative

Forcing Fast Fashion Companies to Shed Light on the Truth Behind Fast Fashion

How it works

Our campaign advocates for government intervention to establish a governing board responsible for enforcing mandatory labels on fast fashion garments. These labels serve as a beacon of transparency, providing consumers with essential information about each garment’s environmental footprint, including carbon emissions and water usage, as well as insights into labor conditions. By urging governments to take action, we aim to empower consumers with the knowledge needed to make informed and ethical fashion choices, ultimately driving positive change within the industry.

Establishing Criteria to identify Fast Fashion Companies

In order to ensure transparency and empower sustainable products, we are proposing that policymakers develop criteria to identify fast fashion companies necessitating mandatory labeling. Establishing these criteria will enable policymakers to enforce mandatory labeling, allowing consumers to make informed choices and promoting sustainability in the fashion industry. Here are a group of criteria we can possibly look into assessing.

Environmental Impact

Assessing the reported environmental footprint of the company’s production processes, including waste generation, water usage, and carbon emissions.

Volume of Production

Examining the quantity of garments produced within a specific timeframe. Fast fashion companies often produce large volumes of clothing to meet demand for quickly changing trends.

Price Point

Evaluate the average price range of the company’s products. While low prices can indicate fast fashion, this criterion should be considered alongside other factors.

Mandatory Label

Here’s a mockup of what the mandatory label can look like on a piece of fast fashion clothing that is deemed not sustainabe.

Driving Change through Mandatory Label

The implementation of mandatory labels could represent a pivotal step towards transforming the fast fashion industry. We can anticipate heightened consumer awareness regarding the environmental and social impacts of their clothing choices, leading to more conscientious purchasing decisions.

For instance, studies have shown the effectiveness of graphic warning labels on cigarette packaging in reducing smoking rates. According to a report by the World Health Organization, countries that implemented prominent graphic warning labels experienced an average smoking rate decrease of about 4%. This demonstrates the potential impact of graphic labels in influencing consumer behaviour and promoting awareness of social and environmental issues.
